Ukrainians: Extension of Temporary Protection.

Updated: Dec 5, 2022

It is no secret that since the start of the war in Ukraine, more than 7 million Ukrainians have fled to other European countries. On March 2022, in response to this influx of refugees and in order to guarantee the same standards and rights to people fleeing Ukraine in all EU member states, the Council of the European Union implemented temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine under the Temporary Protection Directive. This Directive grants refugees from Ukraine the right to accommodation, medical care, work and education.

On 14 October 2022, at the meeting of the Justice and Home affairs Council, the Commission announced that the temporary protection under the Directive will be expanded unchanged, for a period of another year, that is 4 March 2024 (unless further expanded). Further, it is important to note that Ukrainians will not lose their temporary protection status, even if they return back to Ukraine for some time.
